Being Right Isn't Always Being Correct
Last week at practice the subject of appropriate behavior while in uniform came up. During Market Days a couple of people were seen smoking while in uniform. One of our rules is no smoking or drinking while in uniform. This rule exist in an effort to keep a positive image of the squad in the public eye. Various people have hang ups about drinking and smoking, no need for a picture of a squad member to go along with their hang up.
I lurk around the web. In one of my forays around the web, I was gutter crawling and found a picture of a squad member in uniform at a hook-up website. I have no issue with their participation in the website, just the fact a picture of them in uniform is part of it. I mentioned it to the captain over the weekend and said this should be addressed. On Sunday at the end of practice, it hadn't been mentioned, so I stuck my neck out there and said a picture of a squad memeber in uniform wasn't appropriate for this website. I never mentioned a name, I didn't even tell the captain who it was. My intent was to throw out a general comment/concern with a request to remove the picture.
The squad member came up to me afterwards and asked if I was talking about them. I said yes. I then received quite the explosion about how I have no right to comment on what pictures are used especially since my image was included in the picture. A few other comments were said, but they don't need to be repeated due to possible identification clues. Of course this little explosion occurred if full view of the squad, of which 1/3 - 1/2 know now who I was talking about. Guess my not saying names was pointless. Another teammate pulled him aside and tried to calm him down. After waiting a few minutes and the area around him to clear, I tried to explain my reasoning that the website showing a picture of a squad member in uniform is similiar to smoking/drinking in uniform. He wasn't too receptive. He said he wanted the captain's opinion, but wasn't willing to wait for the captain to conclude his business with other squad members.
As of today, Picture Boy is pissed off at me and the picture remains in place. I feel like an ass. I've been counciled that I probably should have talked with Picture Boy first, instead of talking about it as a general issue to the squad. (I'm starting to agree with that, open communication be damned.) Not sure how many other people I've pissed off because I upset Picture Boy. All in all, a great day at practice has been tainted with a huge festering scar.
